Ever think about starting your own company? What about just working for a start-up? Maybe you can get in on the ground floor of the next Google. Be sure you are ready.
I am about to start working for a new company and the company happens to be headed by the guy who gave this commencement speech.
“Work hard, like every waking hour.” That is the advice of my new boss. This is of course making me a little nervous. But the truth is, working hard means different things to different people. I have no doubt that Elon Musk’s version of hard work is about as high as anyone on the planet but it is because he is trying to solve incredibly hard problems that have a chance to change the world. To me, that is something worth working hard for.
The key for me is kind of summed up in this TED talk about work life balance.
I have two takeaways from this talk. The first is, make your own choices. Working 60 hours a week is a lot more manageable if you make the choice to put yourself in that position and most people will only put themselves in that position if they can clearly answer the question of why they are working that hard. The second takeaway is that you need to watch after the small things. If you are going through a busy phase at work, taking 10 minutes on the way home to buy flowers can make all the difference. You just have to recognize the fact that you are working hard to others in your life and make sure they know you appreciate them.
The entire episode of the above clip can be found at Gimlet Media or on iTunes. I highly recommend it because it is a great episode.
